Huck was born in 1968 in Corvallis, Montana. His family life had great impact on him; they all played sports in their school days. After graduating form high school in 1987, he played on Montana's All-state basketball team. He also played basketball later when studying electrical engineering at the California Institute of Technology. In 1989, he took a break and began to play poker. It went so well for him that he did not return to college.
As he says himself, he began playing in a time when people still looked down their noses when he said he was a professional poker player. He made his first tournament winnings in 1990, placing 4th in the WSOP for Limit Omaha and 7 Card Stud Hi/Lo. Hucks biggest success thus far was winning the WSOP main event in 1996 for a prize of one million dollars. He won three further bracelets, in 1994 for $2500 Pot Limit Omaha, in 2000 for $1500 Razz and in 2003 for $5000 Razz. In 1999 he once again made it to the final table in the main event but was knocked out by Noel Furlong, placing sixth. His winnings as of October 2007 totaled nearly $3.5 million dollars.
When asked what qualities give him his edge, he answered:"I'm the Ice Man. I'm the guy who makes that last-second three [pointer] or holes it out from a hundred yards. I just rise to the occasion. The bigger the money, the more pressure, that's when I can focus the best and be more calm and relaxed. That's a good way to be in poker, the more pressure there is, the more you relax."
Furthermore, Huck Seed is an avid side better, like many other poker pros. His most curious bet was made with Phil Hellmuth. He wagered $50,000 that he could stand shoulder deep in the ocean for 18 hours. He overestimated himself: he lasted 3 hours before paddling back to the shore. Shortly thereafter he won $24,000 back from Phil playing 9-ball for $2000 per game.
He made another bet that he would not shave for a year. He would have won, too, had he not been forced to shave for the burial of a relative who died unexpectedly. One time, he bet six figures that he could shoot under 100 on a desert golf course four times in one day. His opponent was allowed to pick the day, and he waited until the temperature was 49 C (120 F). It didn't help: Huck won the bet.
